Brazilian Silviculture Meeting
The Brazilian Silviculture Meeting is the moment when hundreds of professionals get to interact and access up-to-date information, which seeks to answer the Brazilian planted forest sector’s demands for technology. Besides the important lectures given by highly qualified specialists and the presentation of scientific articles by the participants, the Meeting also allows professionals from different companies and institutions to interact, establish partnerships and exchanging experiences regarding the use of technology and strategies which may applied to planted forests.
Planted forests are of growing relevance to the national economy. According to the yearly statistic report published by ABRAF in 2013, the planted forest sector in Brazil reached R$56.3 billion in gross production value in 2012, resulting in R$7.6 billion in taxes. 4.73 million job positions were filled, 621,000 of them directly, 1.31 million indirectly, and 2.42 million from the income effect. The planted forest area reached 7.2 million hectares that year.
The scope of this segment demands equally great advancements in science and technology. Scientific research makes solutions viable and sustainable, increasing forest productivity and improving process and product quality. Over the last 30 years, it has allowed Brazil to become the country with the greatest increase in planted forest productivity and to achieve significant progress in several links in the production chain. Several billion dollars have been and continued to be generated in the country, yet many challenges remain. Only through continuous assimilation of new technology and processes can the sector increase its efficiency and competitiveness.
Embrapa Florestas was the technical coordinator of the 3rd Brazilian Silviculture Meeting along with Malinovski.
